Match Report

Vancouver United FC clinched the MWSL Selects A Division title on Sunday with a convincing 5-1 victory over last place TSS Red. The win gives VUFC a ten point cushion in the standings over second place North Coquitlam with three games left to play.

The first half was all Vancouver. We opened the scoring in the 12th minute after a break down the right side. Nikki Wade cut the ball back to the top of the penalty area for Janelle Roger. Janelle took a touch and placed the ball low just inside the left post. It was 2-0 a few minutes later. Alexa Van Poele and Nikki Wade on the left pressured their goalkeeper into a desperate clearance that went straight to Emily McNie on the right at the top of the penalty area and she just hammered it first time into the top right corner. The third goal came from some more great work defending from the front. This led to the TSS back-line turning over the ball deep in their end. Melissa Tomilin pounced, found herself with the ball in front of the goalkeeper just inside the penalty area and finished low to the right side.

TSS upped their tempo a bit at the start of the second half and the result was their only goal of the game. It was a bit bizarre and it may not have actually gone in at all. A TSS player kicked the ball very high into the swirling wind toward our goal. It came almost straight down on top of the crossbar and then bounced up in the air. Everyone was watching the ball and it appeared to drop behind the goal. It was clearly behind because Sandy Mann, our debutant goalkeeper, had to walk around the goal to get it... but then the ref suddenly indicated that TSS had scored. To our credit we didn't really complain given we were already up 3-0.

Our fourth goal arrived at the 60th minute. Daira Ferrari was fouled about 30 yards from their goal above the right side of the penalty area. Janelle Roger quickly took the kick and caught their goalkeeper completely off-guard sending an absolute howitzer into the top left side of the goal. We finished them off with a fifth goal. This was similar to the first, with Nikki Wade being released down side of the penalty area, but this time she went to goal herself, scoring low just inside the far post.

Player of the Game:

The POG this week is shared between Janelle Roger and Sonia Milani. Injuries have depleted our roster these last few weeks but the thing that ensured we stayed on track is the constant presence of these two amazing players in our midfield. They have both taken hard knocks and played through pain to get us where we are now. They have been the starting point for most of our attacking play and, especially over the last three games, have been outstanding defensively. This was the weakest opponent of those three games but they still kept up the same intensity and drive and this had a huge influence on the rest of the team. Honourable mentions this week go to Nikki Wade, Melissa Tomilin and Daira Ferrari. A special honourable mention also goes to Sophie Draper, a Vancouver Velocity player who played up with us on permit and did a great job in the second half at left back.
