House (U9-U10)

Vancouver United FC House League program focuses on creating a positive environment to learn the game of soccer and to further develop physical literacy skills. The program is briefly outlined below:

  • Provides weekly training sessions and weekly games under a pre-determined schedule
  • Teams will carry 16-18 players per team, and will be sub-divided into two groups who play side-by-side during weekly games
  • Scores are not kept - focus is on player development and acquiring skills in a game setting, as opposed to winning
  • Focus is on parity of play - balanced competition and equal playing time for everyone
  • Led by volunteer coaches, but includes some VanU Academy Coach led sessions

Long Term Player Development

Long Term Player Development defines these age groups as part of the FUNdamentals and Learning to Train stages of development where the individual player development continues to be paramount, especially for the U9 players. However in U9 and U10 many players being to identify with famous players and successful teams, and they want to learn imaginative skills. The effect of the role-model and skill demonstration is very important and the players learn best by doing.

This is an important time to teach basic principles of play and to establish a training ethic and discipline. Repetitions are important to develop technical excellence but creating a fun and challenging environment is still essential for stimulating learning and promoting a love of the game. The emphasis is still FUN. All players play equal time and try all team positions, including goalkeeper.
